PRESENTATION
L’écho des racines is a choreographic project developed in the fertile space between two traditional dances, Flamenco and Quebecois step dancing. Though they share percussive affinities, these two traditions have opposing dynamics. It is within this space of oppositions, through emerging nuance, that this work resides. The poetic universe that upholds this research is sourced from roots and mushrooms; invisible connections that allow subterranean communication, offering support and anchoring, that question our relationship to time and what determines a territory, a tradition, or a dancing body.
L’écho des racines looks at both metaphorical roots (traditions, transmission, genealogy, and the knowledge associated to each of these traditions) as well as the concrete roots of trees that allow growth and anchoring. There is a very strong interconnectedness and subterranean communication between trees, which can span up to multiple kilometers. This communication is possible due to mycorrhizae (the symbiotic association between mushrooms and plant roots), which generously contributes to the creative reflections around L’écho des racines. As Sarah Bronsard is a budding mycologist, the project also explores the world of mushrooms, at the root of all living things, as well as the concept of lichen which challenge the notion of what it is to be an individual (by its symbiotic nature between a mushroom and algae). While simultaneously exploring these traditional dances and research on mushrooms, it is fascinating to research what connects them underground and where their limits lie. The metaphorical universe hovering around this project allows us to surpass the comparative meeting of the two worlds, Flamenco and Quebecois step dancing, to open new territory « between » and to offer a singular percussive body experience.
